The Foundation made the decision based on the recommendations of a response team set up Jan. 31 who judged it likely that participants from China will face travel restrictions both in entering Japan and within China itself.
Residents of China who were accepted into this year’s Tokyo Marathon but are unable to do athlete check-in at the race expo or who are otherwise involuntarily unable to participate will be given places at next year’s race regardless of nationality. Entry fees and charitable donations made for this year’s race will not be refunded, and any entrants who wish to run next year will be required to pay the entry fees again. About 1800 runners living in China run the Tokyo Marathon every year.
